Attention Seeking Behavior

U-Haul Art Fair, Chelsea, NYC
September 25 - 27, 2026

Attention Seeking Behavior is as much a title that collectively ties the artwork together as it is a description of the show’s purpose. Amidst the clamor and rush of exhibitions spread across the city, the title is blunt about its desire. The work demands notice within the confines of the truck, the truck itself calls for notice on the street, and we seek a place within the broader art world.

Attention Seeking Behavior brings together sixteen emerging artists, each of whom has responded to a simple yet identifiable prompt, “something red–not overbearingly red, yet it draws the spotlight within a 16 x 12 inch footprint.” The goal of this prompt is to highlight the unique qualities of the artists’ practices and methodologies, demonstrating through limitations their distinct voices. Every work included in this show incorporates this psychologically influential color, jockeying for recognition without the need to be loud. We ask that each piece be given the focus it desires, however subtly or blatantly it presents itself.

On the color red:

“The emotional connotation of red switches between negative and positive, but in both emotional extremes red signals the presence of a significant stimulus and thus should require an attentional shift towards it.”

Red is simultaneously many emotions collected in one hue. It is passion, aggression, love, hate, power, and desire among others. Its dominance as a color thrives within art and art history. It is well studied how the color of a painting can influence its price at auction. It is with red’s commanding role that leads us to this moment.

We so desperately seek attention, not wholly for ourselves, but on behalf of the artists. While they are at various  stages of their careers, they each are emerging. This show is a similar act of emerging, seeking visibility on their behalf.

Attention Seeking Behavior features the work of Natalie Conway, Kelly Elkowitz, Jeffery Heiman, Andrea Lee Manning, Sylvie Mayer, Luke Morrison, Young One, Miranda Pikul, Kelsey Renko, Hannah Stoll, Ali Sutton, Eden Taff, Eleanor Mahin Thorp, Scott Vander Veen, Ellen Weitkamp, and Jam Yoo
