Posture, body language, and social self-awareness are all subtly altered the moment one enters a gallery. These reactions, whether conscious or subconscious, reflect a standardized and professional relationship between visitor and art. Art itself is precious and delicate, and as a result, we engage it according to the physical boundaries established by museums, galleries, and art fairs. Indoor Games (It’s Raining Outside) explores how this dynamic between artwork and viewer can be initiated by bending and pushing beyond these conventions, not by dismissing them, but by altering the moments of contact between participants. Indoor Games (It’s Raining Outside) features the work of Davis Arney, Natalie Conway, Sylvie Mayer, Miranda Pikul, Kelsey Renko, Hannah Stoll, Scott Vander Veen, and Ellen Weitkamp.

Each artwork participates in a game of hide-and-seek, attempting to bend the boundaries that traditionally separate art from those who encounter it. Their goal is not to evade the gaze of gallery visitors, but to establish a new relationship, one not entirely governed by the long-standing conventions that dictate how art is viewed and experienced. Some may attempt to camouflage in plain sight, hoping to blend in among other visual stimuli, others have scuttled away to darker corners of the gallery. We ask the viewers to move their bodies in ways unusual to an exhibition space: to hunt out the work, thus requiring a level of attention and viewer participation the casual stroll through a white cube does not.

Indoor Games (It’s Raining Outside) playfully examines and reconsiders the roles that both artwork and gallery-goer are expected to perform. This is why the artwork hides, not to escape the eyes that search for it, but to be found. It is in that moment of discovery that the exhibition finds its success: the excitement of the seeker finding, and the concealed being found.

While with the installation we have hidden the work, the artists included in this exhibition also investigate themes of searching, revealing, and uncovering, whether by means of the imagery they create or their process of making. In her slowly layered paintings, Weitkamp merges layers of composition, evoking the hazy qualities of memory rather than the clarity of documentation. Like Weitkamp’s thoughtful approach, Arney depicts moments that capture a sense of time, stillness, and the implications of a larger world beyond the frame. While in contrast, Conway relentlessly layers and sands surfaces into abstract geological yet chalkboard like accumulations of aged pigment and material, hiding only to reveal through removal. In a way equally as expressive and vulnerable in its emotional groundedness, Pikul’s paintings examine restrained awkwardness and its revelation. Vander Veen and Mayer explore manifestations of the body. Vander Veen’s work straddles the border between sculpture and painting, incorporating collaged images of bodies among unexpected objects forming a mental map across his surfaces. Mayer, preoccupied with thresholds and in-between states, depicts spaces that mediate between the public and the private, the visible and the hidden, through the metaphor of theater and dance. With rhythmic and dancing marks, Stoll’s abstract painting practice actively searches for the roles and identities of the wooden reliefs emerging from her surfaces. Finally, Renko builds layers of paint which are eventually covered, abandoned, and scratched away to evoke a sensory experience, drawing from feelings of physical and emotional closeness.

The work simultaneously conceals and reveals itself, and we invite you to join in this game, seek the hidden artwork, and to challenge how you encounter art such as by bending and searching with a flashlight or opening doors and drawers.
